The South Americans are opposed to the idea that the Atletico Madrid forward could end up playing for Spain at next summer’s World Cup.

And according to AS, the Federations are ready to take the matter to FIFA headquarters in Switzerland.

Once the Spanish Football Federation submits the certificate it received from the CBF which acknowledges that Costa has never played an official match for Brazil to the Players’ Status Committee, FIFA should, in theory, grant the player permission to be called by Spain.

But the CBF are within their right to appeal at the Dispute Resolution Chamber and for the RFEF that is the problem. If an appeal is lodged, the player will be ineligible to play for either nation in any tournament organized by FIFA.
